Overview of Database: Database: “A database is collection of related information in a systematic manner”. Related means that the information is regarding a specific domain and systematic means that it is maintained in some order. For example, A list of roll numbers and names of a particular class. This is an example of database which is specific to a class and must be in ascending order of roll numbers. Similarly a diary having names and phone numbers of all known persons is another example of database. A database can have many forms like students roll list on paper, attendance record in computer, as a phonebook in mobile phone, as birthday records in a digital diary etc.

Any useful collection of data is database.

In general database need not necessarily means computer based collection of information. But we usually use the term database and DBMS interchangeably. However there is a subtle difference between the two.

Database is a generalized term for any useful collection of logically coherent data whereas DBMS is a computer term for a software specifically designed to maintain database.

Databases fundamentally organize the data into hierarchies (setting aside the relational database concept for a moment). The building blocks for Creating databases starting from the top level are the data structure or Schema. Each data structure is made up of a series of records, and each record has a set of predefined fields. No matter if you are building you own database from Scratch or buying a $100,000 ERP system, functionally they are all the same. They all have a data structure, records and fields.

Physical files may differ considerably from logical files. Here, the file represents a particular way of physically storing data. Data may be physically stored in a variety of files, such as an indexed file, a “flat” file, a DBMS file, etc. Even manual files follow this model with the exception they also Store inputs and/or outputs (both of which consist of records and data elements).
